8B---February 5, 2004 The Cuba Free Press Rural Democratic Caucus formed to fight for rural rights Rep. Frank Barnitz (D-Lake Spring) announced this week the new Rural Democratic Caucus' agenda for Missouri, listed in a Bill of Rights for Rural Missouri. "Our agenda in Rural Missouri is all about equality," said Barnitz. "The caucus, made up of 16 State represen- tatives, slated a variety of issues that affect us here in rural Missouri." In their Bill of Rights, Rural Democratic Caucus members are calling for equitable sup- port in five areas: • Rural schools • Rural health care • Economic development for family farms and small rural businesses • Rural transportation • Rural technology develop- ment "All these issues have a direct impact on the people that I represent," said Barnitz. "These issues can be promoted as sound, realistic views of our rural heritage and, at the same time, expand into new eras of change. "With the ever changing world, there is no reason we can't have the high tech jobs right here in rural Missouri. All we want is access to tech- nology such as digital satellite link-ups, cell phone reception in all areas, and interactive tel- evision," added Barnitz. Barnitz said access to quali- ty health care has become an extreme problem in rural Missouri. He noted that the ability for rural Missouri resi- dents to get quality care in a timely fashion has declined. "The amount of time doctors spend with their patients has declined due to restrictions placed upon them from groups outside of rural areas, to a rural way of life," said Sometimes it's the only way Barnitz, a life-long rural resi- doctors and hospitals located in dent. "Community feelings are out-state Missouri can survive, still in place: Neighbors still It s time that doctors andZ'ome to support pp|e in need, patients determine how much regardless of the need. The time is necessary for recovery or the method of treatment, and not someone looking at a book of averages," emphasized Barnitz. "There are so many positives more one-on-one attention spent on people in my district make for a better road of com- munication to their needs, wants, and concerns. It's what rural life is all about." I knew daylight was some- where, a few hours away. My head it was hurting, seems like an every day thing. I guess from all the tension that a hard life can bring. My memories were taking m e far back into my past. As I looked at my choices and the life I had cast. I could see a young cowboy, who'd yell at the moon. After tasting bad whiskey in a rowdy saloon. Time made me smarter, I found me a wife. A pretty young flower to help cheer up my life. We started out poor but I soon learnedlme a trade. I soon started making money by the choices I'd made. But she wouldn't stay with me, I never knew why. Soon I was back drinking, so I wouldn't cry. Time for me now was wastin, so I broke every rule. Behind my back some were laughing at me, such a fool. My big house seems emptyc- there's a gravesite at the foot of the hill. A place where they'll lay me when I've suffered my final ill. In a blanket they'll wrap me, they'll talk of what I have been. As I sleep that someday comes to all men. My rope and my saddle lay here at the .foot of my bed, They'll help lay for my wastin after I'm dead. It was of my own dealing, sometimes one deals his own hand.
