Huzzah Creek Notes
,, i
By Jerry Wilson
We have a group of young
people working for us this sum-
mer in the park and so far it
has been a pleasant experience.
One young lady has been driv-
ing our one-ton dump truck
back and forth with loads of
gravel and from the grin on her
face you would think she was
driving a Cadilc.
One day Rick had them all
lined up with hand tools dig-
ging weeds out of our driveway
when I walked out of the office
and broke into uncontrollable
laughter. Rick was wearing his
park uniform and a pair of dark
sunglasses. I told him all he
needed was a shotgun to look
like a scene out of the old movie
'Cool Hand Luke". Let's hope
he doesn't have ' a failure to
communicate' with the kids.
Midnight is afraid of thunder.
This all started a couple of
years ago when a storm
dropped a large black oak tree
into the back yard and also
across our Blazer. Midnight
doesn't forget things and now
as soon as it begins to thunder
we will find her pressed up
against the back door.
We will let her in and as soon
as she gets in the house she is
OK. She isn't one of those dogs
that pace back and forth, she
will just lay down and go to
sleep. Of course if she gets to
come in the other two girls
think they ought to get to also.
One night it began to rumble
off in the south and sure
enough Midnight was on the
steps. I let them in and things
settled down until Sue opened
the package of chew toys she
had got for Fluffy.
Fluffy loves her squeaky toys
and really like to hear the
squeak. Over the last few
months her favorite toy had
almost lost its squeak and
Fluffy seemed real disappoint-
ed when she squeezed it and
nothing happened.
Sue went to Rolls one day
and while atW abe had
picked up a package that-had
not just one but two squeaky
toys in it. While unwrapping it
a toy squeaked and Fluffy ran
over and sat down in an atti-
tude of rapt attention. She
spen[ ];h-e nxt-half-hour driv-
ing us all nuts by first squeak-
ing one and then the other.
I called a friend who is going
to demonstrate natural dyes at
the Old Dillard Picnic and
finally she asked, Where in
the heck are you She kept

hearing a steady squeak,
squeak, squeak in the back-
ground. As she knows our dogs
she reared when we told her
what was going on.
On another occasion when
the girls were on storm watch I
watched Fluffy take her toy
and sneak up behind Midnight
and Sneakers, who were trying
to sleep, and squeak the toy as
loud as she could. You could
almost see her laugh
Who says that dogs don't
have a sense of humor?
Midnight loves to jump ut) in
my lap and lie there when she
gets in the house. As she
weighs in at over fifty pounds
after a while my legs began to
go to sleep. Also Midnight is
our stinky dog. She has that
Labrador coat of hair and the
grease that makes the water
roll oft ' of it also at times gets
rancid smelling.
I guess it is about time to go
thand to paw comba!;_with her
arigive her a bath. She will
carry on like I am pulling her
toenails out and this from the
dog that every time she gets
out heads straight for the
creek.
The garden is doing well and
we ate the last of the lettuce
the other day. While my moth-
er was down she showed me
how to make wilted lettuce. It
is a shame that the lettuce bolt-
ed so soon this spring. The
tomatoes are doing well so far
this year and I just might have
a ripe tomato by July 4th.
I harvested the first of the
snow peas and used them along
with some green onions, carrots
(from the store) and chicken
breasts to make some
The beets which I had
given up on earlier are sh
signs of actually produci]
something this year. Sue's
garden is thriving except
the golden sage and she
'barbered' some of the
several times.
Summer has definitely
down on the banks of the
tiful Huzzah Creek.
