6A July 24, 2003 For the Record The Cuba Free Press Obituaries w Owen Chandler Owen Chandler of Cuba, Missouri was bern on October 19, 1933 at Davisville, Missouri to the union of Estel Chandler and Gertrude (Brummet) Chandler and passed away sudden- ly on July 13, 2003 at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center of Rolla, Missouri at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 24 days. On July 16, 1953 Owen was inducted into the Army of the United States and was honorably discharged on July 13, 1956. On April 19, 1957 Owen was united in mar- riage to Patricia Brewer in Cuba, Missouri. Four sons, Randy, John, Larry and Gary Chandler, and one daughter, Joni, was bern to this union. Owen was preceded in death by three sons, Larry, Gary, and John Chandler, parents, five brothers, Homer, Floyd, Loyd Chandler, Elmer and Homer Whittaker; and three sisters, Thelma Chandler, Doni Chandler, and Leonna Whittaker. He was a member of the Church of God and a retired employee of the City of Cuba. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are his devoted wife Patricia Chandler; one son Randy Chandler and wife Betty; one daughter Joni Morrow and husband Dusty; two brothers Delmar Whittaker and wife Bessie and Cleo Chandler and wife Janet; one sister Bernice Carl; five grandchildren; one great grandson; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends. Owen was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, good friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Owen Chandler was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri where funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Military honors were held at the cemetery. Interment was in the Kinder Cemetery, Cuba, Mo. Pallbearers were Dennis, Jim, Ricky and Bob Chandler, Roger and Ronnie Carl. All arrange- ments were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Mo. Glen Kennedy Chiles Glen Kennedy Chiles was bern Saturday, April 22, 1916 in Cuba, Missouri to the late Edward Chiles and Emma E. Kennedy Chiles and departed this life Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the Cuba Manor Nursing Home in Cuba, Mo. at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 23 days. Glen graduated from Cuba High School and began working in the construction business working his way up to engineering position. He worked for Alberecci Construction where he helped to establish nuclear power plants throughout the world. Glen enjoyed playing the piano and organ for his own entertainment and for his friends. Glen accepted the Lord many years ago and was of the Methodist faith. However he last attended the Cuba Presbyterian Church. Glen was preceded in death by his parent, and several brothers and sisters. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his dear friend Edna Lea .and family, Pat and Toni; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends all who will fondly remember and sadly miss Glen Kennedy Chiles. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, Mo. with Rev. Delmar B. Hutson officiating. Musical selection was In The Garden. Burial was in the Kinder Cemetery in Cuba, Mo. All arrangements under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home in Cuba, Mo. Lyle Eugene "Gene" Mason Lyle Eugene Mason was bern Friday, August 13, 1926, at Courtois, Missouri in Washington County, to the union of Reco Mason and Bessie (Brakefield) Mason. He departed this life at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla, Mo., Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 3 days. G ene served his country honorably in the United States Army in beth World War II and the Korean War. He was inducted November 20, 1944. During his service in World War II, he received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Army of Occupation Medal Germany. He separated from active duty August 26, 1946. On October 19, 1950, he was called back to active duty to serve in the Korean War. He saw active combat duty North of the 38th par- allel. He was wounded during this action and was decorated with the Purple heart. He returned home and was separated from service October 3, 1951. Rev. Henry Butts, a former school teacher, united him in marriage to Hazel Cottrell on October 10, 1947, at Cherryville, Mo. They enjoyed over 55 years together. Places of resi- dence have included Dillard, Mo., St. Louis, Mo., Salem, Mo., Viburnum, Mo., and finally Steelville, Mo. As a young man, Gene worked at various fac- teries in Missouri. Atr serving his country, he became self-employed as a farmer, painter, ,--d paperhanger in the Salem and Viburnum are ' He retired from the painting and wallpaper business. As a teenager, he received forgiveness of sins and salvation from his Savior, Jesus Christ. He served the Lord and church in the capacity of deacon and trustee. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Steelville, Mo. He was also an active member of the Tabor Memorial V.F.W. Post #6479. In addition to his parents, an infant sister, Shirley Mason, and a brother-in-law, Edward Sellers, preceded Gene in death. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Hazel Mason of the home; son Lyle Mason of Arcadia, Kansas, and son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Melissa Mason of Rolla, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Candice Nelson and husband Richard of Sullivan, Lucas Mason of Sullivan, Eric Mason of Boss, Joshua Mason, Phillip Mason, Jonathon Mason, and Sara Mason, all of Rolla, Mo. Three great grandchildren, Sidney Nelson, Emma Nelson, and Dean Nelson all of Sullivan; brother, Vondel Mason of Festus, Mo., sister, Thelma Sellers and paternal nephew Ronnie Sellers, beth of Arnold, Mo. Gene will also be missed by a special aunt, Lorene Eaten of Davisville, Mo.; cousin, Stanley Eaton and wife Tammy of Davisville, Mo.; three brothers-in-law, Darrell Cottrell and wife Sandy ofYorba Linda, California, Glenn Cottrell and Wife Betty of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Vernon Cottrell and wife Jerrie of Monroe, Louisiana; nieces; nephews; other relatives, and many friends. Lyle Eugene Mason lay in state 4-9 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2003, at Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19, 2003 in the Britton Chapel with Dr. Cardis Bryan and Rev. Jim Simmons officiating. Larry and Geraldine Sherrill provided musical selections. Committal prayers and interment were in Old Dillard Cemetery, Dillard, Mo. Full mili- tary honors were graveside. Serving as pall- bearers were Lucas Mason, Norman Fallese, Stanley Eaten, Bill Freeman, Gilbert Sellers, and Bill Gibson. Arrangements were under the direction of Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Emma L. Ryther Emma L. Ryther, of Cook Station, Missouri passed away Friday, July 18, 2003 in Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 88 years and 11 days. Emma was bern in St. Louis, Missouri July 7, 1915 to Fred and Elbie (Haas) Kamp. Emma Kamp was united in marriage to Ronald Ryther on September 15, 1935 and to this union three children were bern. Emma was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend and will be sadly missed. Emma loved gardening, visiting with friends and family, her greatest joy was taking care of others by cooking a meal, visiting the sick and loving her family. Emma leaves to mourn her children, Rosie King and husband Dan, of Cook Station, Mo.; Don King and wife, Doris, of St. James, Mo.; Phillip King and wife, Alta, of Florissant, Mo.; 17 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; nephews, Robert and Tom Ryther, and a host of other extended family members and friends. Preceding Emma in death were her parents; loving husband of 62 years, Ronald Ryther on March 7, 1998; son, Ronnie Ryther; daughter, Marlene (Ray) Wall and one grandson. Funeral services for Emma L. Ryther were held Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with Rev. Douglas Clark officiating. A visitation for family and friends was held Monday, July 21, 2003 from 6-8 p.m. All arrangements were under the direction of James & Gahr Mortuary of St. James. Luther Boyd Watkins Luther Boyd "Bubba" Watkins was bern, December 4, 1940 in St. Louis, Mo. Beloved husband of Jeannie Watkins, whom he married on January 14, 1983 in Bogalusa, Louisiana. "Bubba" is survived by his only son Danny, and his wife Julie of Massachusetts; his daughters Taramy Wright and husband David of Missouri; Chrissy Hamilton and her husband Jeff of Louisiana; Missy Bunch and her hus- band Roger of Louisiana; Misty Nicolisi of Louisiana; and Nicole Garms and her husband Mike of Cuba, Mo. "Bubba" is also survived by one brother Fred Metlach of South Carolina; a sister Joanne Shapiro of California, and his mother Gladys Lee of the Cuba Manor Nursing Home in Cuba, Mo.; 19 grandchildren and four great grandchil- dren, his Christian family of the Cuba Church of Christ and a host of close friends. "Bubba" passed from this life to Paradise on July 10, 2003 in Rolla, Mo. at the Phelps County Regional Medical Center at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 6 days.
